How scores work

Settings

Keepers is a gluten-free grocery list. We do not rank the cheapest box. We rank whether the taste is good enough to justify the extra money — measured against other gluten-free food in the same aisle.

What’s scored

  • 491 products across 18 grocery-style aisles and 236 brands.
  • Taste (0–10) is compiled from published blind tests and specialist roundups — Kitchn, Healthline, Eater, Delish, Good Housekeeping, Tasting Table, GFF Magazine, America’s Test Kitchen (via secondary reports), and celiac-focused testers. Each product page quotes the source and links out.
  • Price is a typical 2025–2026 US grocery shelf price, not a live crawler. We convert to price per ounce so a tiny boutique box cannot hide behind a low sticker.
  • Worth (0–100) starts as taste × 10, then moves with price versus the aisle median (per ounce). Cheaper than typical gluten-free food in that aisle gets a modest bonus. A premium only holds the score if the taste is high enough to cover it. Cardboard at $3 still loses.

Worth labels

  • Steal

Taste more than covers what you pay.

  • Worth it

    The gluten-free premium is justified.

  • Fair

You're paying the GF tax. Fine, not thrilling.

  • Stretch

Taste does not fully justify the cost.

  • Skip

Spend the money on a better aisle pick.

Internet scores, with citations

Crowdsourced apps go stale, attract fake reviews, and blur the line between “I like this” and “a test kitchen ranked this.” Keepers starts from the public record: named publications, dated tests, quoted lines. Your own taste and notes stay on-device and never overwrite the published score.

Amazon stars are used only when they clearly agree with a test — they are not the score. We do not scrape full reviews. Quotes are short fair-use excerpts with a link to the original.

Certification is not taste

GFCO and dedicated facilities lower medical risk. They do not make a cookie taste better. Cheerios and Omission are marked Caution or Gluten-removed because celiac organizations disagree with a supermarket “gluten-free” halo — even when the food tastes fine.

This is not medical advice. Always read the package in your hand. Formulas change. US Worcestershire is not UK Worcestershire. Corn tortillas are often gluten-free; check for a GF label because of shared lines. Flavored hard cider sometimes is not. Hard seltzer is usually made without gluten grains; check the label.

Barcode lookup

Scan hits Keepers first. Snap the barcode, live-scan, or type the UPC. Unknown codes fall through to Open Food Facts, a public product database. That lookup can flag gluten on the label but will not invent a taste score. You can save what you find as Yours — on this phone, not a shared review.

Something we don’t have

If you love a box that isn’t in Keepers, add it from Saved or after a scan. Your taste, price, and notes stay on this phone. They never overwrite a published score. Fill in taste, price, and ounces and we run the same aisle-median math — labeled Yours, not a roundup.

Dining

Dining is a city pack. Grocery is the product. Buffalo is the only pack we edit, and it stays off until you turn it on in Settings. It is not a tab. Safety first, then whether the GF plate is actually good. We re-check each quarter. Confirm with the kitchen before you go.
